Return of the Buffalo to Fort Peck
The last buffalo hunt at Fort Peck was held in approximately 1881. Afterwards, buffalo were absent from the landscape for almost 120 years until Fort Peck Tribes established two herds, whose purpose was to contribute to a sustainable future for buffalo at Ft. Peck
In 2015, World Wildlife Fund funded a survey to understand the values, needs, and aspirations of the people of Fort Peck to see the return of the buffalo. The Fort Peck Buffalo Survey was supported by the Fort Peck Pté Group.
